Sicilians have a wine making tradition dating back many years. There are a much larger selection of Sicilian wines available in supermarkets in Sicily than there are in the UK. A lot of Sicilians still enjoy making their own wine. They tend to follow recipes and use methods passed on from generation to generation. When my husband and his brothers were younger they used to import grapes into the UK to make wine for their own enjoyment. The process would take weeks and use a number of different types of equipment.
Sicily also boasts a large number of lemon trees and so drinks both alcoholic and non alcoholic featuring lemons are also popular. Alcoholic lemon drinks include limoncello, which again is often homemade.
Marsala also derives from Sicily and is made of course in the town of Marsala. It is a fortified wine served traditionally as an aperitif between the first and second courses of a meal. It is also used often in cooking.
