Sicilian Snakes

This page isn't about the wildlife of Sicily, but rather about a strange looking vegetable, the Sicilian Snake that has taken an allotment in Birmingham by storm.

The Sicilian Snake also known as Serpente Di Sicilia and Cucuzze, can grow over 2 meters in length. It can be grown like a courgette, and many Sicilians I know use them in soups. I started growing them on my allotment and now over 30 plot holders grow this vegetable. We even have a competition for the longest Sicilian Snake. Some of the plot holders are so determined to grow the longest one that they ar supporting them on planks of wood. and small brick stacks. In the photo below plot holder Alec is holding two impressive snakes.
