The Beach Beetle

If you are on holiday on the beach In San Leone on the south coast of Sicily you will most likely encounter the infamous beetle. I am not sure what type of beetle it is, but there are lots of them. They crawl along the beach and you see lots of people trying to flick them away or panicking when they go near them. Personally i am used to them now. My son and husband decided one year to collect a large number of them and put them in an upturned frisbee to watch them interact. Amazing what some people will do for entertainment.

 

 

Here is my son's top tip for you. If you don't want the San Leone beach beetle to crawl on your towel, dig a trench around it about a hands depth with steep sides. At one end make a shallower escape route away from you. Put your towel in the middle and relax knowing that the beetles can't climb the steep sides to get to you.
