So What is Sicily like? What is a holiday in Sicily like? Which parts of Sicily should you visit? What is the weather in Sicily like? Hopefully the pages within this section of theSicilySite should help you answer some of these questions about Sicily.

So What is Sicily like?

Where do you start? Well we can only comment from our own personal experiences and our observations of the island of Sicily formed over many years. Sicily has an atmosphere that is distinct from Northern italy and from most of the Italian mainland. This could be due to the history of Sicily, it's climate and the way the people are.

If you travel into the interior of Sicily you will find hills and rugged scenery. In the summer months the Sicilian landscape is a parched yellow colour, in the spring it can be a lush green. In many Sicilian towns you can see bourganvillea flowering in abundance over garden walls and the sweet perfume of Jasmine fills the air. Sicily has some beautiful beaches that will most likely be deserted in all but the summer months of June, July and August.

There are historic and ancient sites and ruins to visit, one of which, the Teatro Grecco in Taormina is set against the stunning backdrop of Europe's largest and most active volcano, Mt Etna.

What can I expect from trip to Sicily?

It depends on what you are after. You could have a great beach holiday and do nothing much except read a book. Or you could do a lot of site seeing and visit some of the popular tourist towns like Taormina, Agrigento or Palermo. You could maybe book a stay in a farmhouse and have a rustic type trip.

Our recommendation would be that whatever you do in Sicily you should maybe try to immerse yourself in the culture. you could do this by spending time in cafes people watching while you sip a coffee or eat a granita. Using public transport is another good way to observe the Sicilian locals going about their day to day business. Or if you hire a car you could really explore Sicily and maybe visit some Sicilian towns that are off the beaten track. If you could coincide your visit with one of the town's feast days then you would see a side of Sicily a lot of tourists don't ever see.

All in all, you could if you choose, be very busy on your holiday or trip to Sicily, or just take it easy and relax.
