Palermo Airport is also known as Punta Raisi and Falcone-Borsellino Airport. It is 19 miles to the west of Palermo. (Click here for a map). Palermo Airport is not the biggest airport in the world and if you have to spend more than a couple of hours there, I would suggest that you take a good book with you. There are a number of bars and shops that you can wander around but don't expect too much.

Landing Story

In june 2006 I was on a plane coming in to land at Palermo Airport. We were flying low, only minutes from landing when the plane suddenly banked. i was looking out of the window and could see the ground in front of me. As the plane pulled up sharply and circled there were a lot of shocked faces in the cabin. We eventually landed safely. The explanation that the pilot gave was that there was a car on the runway chasing birds. Don't let this put you off going though, this is the first and only time that something like this has happened to me.

Hiring a car is a great way to see Sicily. There are many car rental companies within the airport, however we would always advise you to book ahead.
