Taormina

No trip to Sicily is complete without a visit to Taormina. It is on the East Coast of Sicily. Each time we visit, our route takes us on a road where you can see Mount Etna in the distance. You notice that at this stage of the journey the scenery becomes a little greener due to the fertile volcanic soils. Taormina was also the setting for some of the film The Big Blue.

Teatro Greco Taormina - Phot by Angelina

This is Teatro Greco, or the Greek Theatre. Built by the Greeks in the 3rd century BC, but used later by the Romans to hold gladiatorial shows, the site now hosts concerts and plays. It is open to the public to wander around at a small charge. The setting for this theatre is spectacular. The photo above shows the view inland towards the mountains and hill side towns. The photo below shows the stunning blue Mediterranean sea. Often in the distance you can see the orange lava topped peak of Mount Etna.
