Traveling to Sicily? Traveling around Sicily?

Obviously, if you are traveling to Sicily, then the quickest way to get there will be by plane. Sicily has two airports one in Catania and one in Palermo. The cheapest way to get to Sicily from the UK is via Ryan Air from Stansted airport, or by flying with Easy Jet from Gatwick. Both airlines land in Palermo.

Save big on your trip to Sicily. Save hundreds, or even thousands.

Car Insurance

Hiring a car is a great way to explore Sicily. I love driving in Sicily and I am sure a lot of people would disagree with my viewpoint, but i find it a lot more fun and much easier to do than driving in the UK. It seems to me that in Sicily, other drivers don't seem to be as aggressive, or have as much attitude as UK drivers. Anything seems to go, which makes it a more interesting experience if nothing else.

There are though two things that I would definitely recommend that you consider. One is taking a SatNav with you. The other is taking out independent car insurance for your hire car. I find that by having the hire car insurance I can relax a bit more when navigating my way around narrow little streets.

Although your hire car company will probably offer insurance it is much more economical to take it out separately. It also covers you for a year, so if you hire other cars you are covered. the company that I use costs £49 for a year of cover. Click here to visit their website. If you don't intend to take out insurance, I still recommend that you look at their site a it has a good glossary of terms that make hiring a car easier.

Strange desert

Before Ryan Air flights to Sicily, we used other commercial airlines. Flying with a non low budget airline meant getting a different level of service. In particular, passengers are provided with in flight meals. On one flight with the German Company Lufthansa, we were served with a slightly unusual meal. It was unusual in that it was the only time I have ever had a curry on an airplane. I am not complaining though, as it was one of the best meals I have had on a plane.

Before the days of Ryan Air, there were not as many tourists visiting Sicily form the UK. this meant that flights were mainly full of Sicilian travelers. The curry wasn't particularly well received by them, but what was particularly amusing was the look on two of the passenger's faces near by as they got stuck into their 'desert'.

We had been served popadoms, which they had eaten, and these had come with a mango chutney which they had saved thinking that it was some sort of Jelly desert. Shouldn't laugh really, but we did..

Public transport in Sicily

Whenever we don't hire a car, we use the bus to travel around Sicily. Buses are a good cheap way to get around locally, and will give you a good opportunity to mingle with Sicilians. They also provide a cheap way of traveling to major towns and cities in Sicily. In Sicily you need to buy your bus ticket before you get on your bus. They can be bought in Tabaccheria (the shops with the big white 'T' on a black background. When you get on the bus, the driver may want to punch the ticket and then you need to put it in the machine midway down the bus so that it can be date stamped. You can reuse the ticket for another journey within one and a half hours, of the date stamp.

All large coaches tend to be air conditioned, although it isn't always switched on, and are very regular. If you are flying into Palermo using Ryan Air and arrive at 10.10 am then there are a lot of coaches that you can catch to most places in Sicily from just outside the airport doors. We will put an up to date timetable here after our next visit which will most likely be in August 2007.

Traveling by train is also a good way to get around the island. If you are landing at Palermo airport and want to get to the main city, then a regular shuttle train operates between the airport and Central Station every six minutes between 5.40 and 23.40. Journey time is approximately 55 minutes, and tickets cost €4.50.
